Clothes & Other Paraphernalia

  • Visitors shoulddress modestly and respectfully especially if you are planning a visit to the monasteries, Dzongs and other religious institutions. Long pants and long sleeved tops should be worn when visiting such places. As a mark of respect, be kind enough to remove your hats, caps etc. as you enter religious and administrative premises, institutions and in any other place that you come across with the national flag being raised.
  • Communications

  • The country has a good network of telecommunication facilities. Most hotels and cafe’s offer Wi-Fi internet access. Bhutan has a comprehensive mobile (cell) phone network with global roaming also accessable.
  • Electricity

  • All major towns are well connected with electricity that runs on 220/240 volts with round hole two-pin and three-pin power outlets.
  • It is recommended that you bring flat-to-round pin converters for your electronics if necessary, however, most hotels offer multi plug sockets.
  • Health Inoculations

    Before embarking on a trip to Bhutan, please seek advice from your doctor with regard to vaccinations and appropriate medication you should have prior to your travels. As a minimum you should have tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis A inoculations.

    Money

  • Bhutan’s currency is the Ngultrum (Nu.). It is at par with the Indian rupee which is widely accepted in the country. You can also pay in United States dollar.
  • In addition, POS (Point of Sale) services are available nationwide, meaning visitors can pay by credit card at most hotels and handicrafts stores.
  • Photography

  • Bhutan offers immense opportunities for photography especially during outdoor sightseeing trips. However you should check with your guide before taking pictures or filming inside Dzongs, temples, monasteries and religious institutions as in some area photograph/filming is not permitted.
  • You are free to capture images of the landscape, the panoramic views of the mountain ranges, rural life, flora and fauna, distinctive Bhutanese architecture and the exterior of Dzongs and Chortens.
  • Shopping

  • Some popular handicraft items available for purchase are hand-woven textiles of raw silk or silk, carved masks of various animals, woven baskets of cane and bamboo, wooden bowls known as Dapas, handmade paper products or finely crafted goods of silver.
  • Other items you may be interested in are the exquisite Buddhist thangkha paintings or Bhutan’s wide array of colourful and creative postage stamps. You can come across these items in the many handicraft shops in and around Thimphu and in other major towns.
  • Please remember that buying and selling of antiques is strictly forbidden in Bhutan.
  • Time

  • The standard time is 2 hours behind Singapore time.
  • Weather

  • Although the end of the year symbolises winter in Bhutan, it is not as cold as of other Himalayan countries. The weather tends to be on the colder side with chilling winds.
  • The average maximum temperature remains up to 8-degree Celsius with an average minimum temperature up to 4-degree Celsius, with almost no rain. Places in the higher altitudes, however, might experience a bit of snow like Thimphu and Paro but those in lesser altitudes are fairly snow-less.
  • In Punakha, sandwiched between Gasa and Thimphu, a relatively warm climate is noticed. The average temperature in Punakha in December remains 12-degree Celsius with an average minimum temperature of 6-degree Celsius. There is no snowfall in Punakha.
  • Precautions

  • Bhutan is one of the safest countries in the world however you should still exercise caution when visiting. Please ensure that your belongings especially your passports, cameras, wallets and purses are properly secured. Please refrain from leaving such items within sight or in locked vehicles while sightseeing.
  • Avoid drinking tap water which has not been boiled or ice cubes in drinks at all times as most water sources in Bhutan are untreated. One can easily acquire affordable treated and bottled water.
  • Also, Bhutan has a duty to protect its citizens from drugs and tobacco products. To do this we need your help and cooperation. Please co-operate if stopped and asked about your baggage. Please do not carry tobacco goods in excess of the set limit.

    Assemble at Changi Airport for your flight to Paro. Upon arrival, be met and enjoy a local welcome from Bhutanese representatives with Khada. Here, you will visit Rinpung Dzong, built in 1644 to defend the valley against Tibetan invaders and next is to Kyichu Lhakhang Temple, the oldest monastery in Bhutan built in the 7th century. Here, you can see how Bhutanese farmers lived and get a chance to taste Ara, a traditional alcoholic beverage made from native high-altitude tolerant barley, rice, or wheat. This evening, enjoy an interactive session and learn from the locals on how to make their famous chili cheese dish in a DIY ema datshi session, a local chili cheese dish and get to sample this exquisite taste.

    Take an early breakfast and embark on a hike to Bhutan’s most iconic landmark, Taktsang Lhakhang, also known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery. It clings precariously to a granite cliff 900 metres above Paro Valley. The monastery was first built in 1692 at a cave where legend has it that the great Guru Rimpoche flew to the site atop the back of a tigress and meditated in the cave in order to subdue evil demons residing within. You may wish to take a pony ride at your own expense. Thereafter, visit Drugyel Dzong, the victory fortress built in 1647 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate his victory over Tibetan invaders led by Mongolian warlord Gushri Khan in 1644. Wrap up your day with a Gho and Kira traditional dress-up session and flood your social media page endless feed of that cultural perfect-picture you.

    After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive through Haa Valley fill with spiritual opulence and known as the "Hidden-Land Rice Valley". It is one of the most beautiful valleys that is complemented by the two sacred temples – Lhakhang Karpo (The Black Temple) and the Lhakhang Nagpo (The White Temple). Witness how the structures are built without any architectural design. It is built with stones that are haphazardly arranged that form the colors of the structure and are still vivid today. Catch a glimpse of Wangchuck Lo Dzong from afar for a picturesque view of this exquisite modern construction that are nestled on a gentle slope that leads to the pristine Haa Chhu River. End the day at Thimphu.

    This morning, visit Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, where you can catch a panoramic view of Thimphu Valley and marvel at the 169-foot tall bronze Buddha Dordenma Statue, the largest statue in the country. Next, explore National Memorial Chorten, a stupa built to honour the late 3rd king, before heading over to Motithang Takin Preserve, where you can observe strangle, gentle beasts resembling goat-cow hybrids – Takin – roam within this patch of forest. See art and craft students at work on thangkas painting, woodcarving, exquisite embroidery or clay statue-making (clay) at National Institute for Zorig Chusum and commonly known as 'the painting school'. Next, visit Simply Bhutan, a living museum whose primary aim is to conserve the culture and customs of traditional Bhutanese life. Try out archery, the Bhutanese National Sport. After lunch, stop over at Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory, a pilot conservative program to preserve their traditional handmade paper making. You can observe the entire process of producing handmade paper using ancient traditional methods that have been practiced for generations. Amble through an authentic Bhutanese crafts bazaar and the bustling Norzin Lam, where you can purchase handicrafts, garments and accessories at your own expense. End the day with a Buffet dinner and Local Cultural dance performance.

    Enjoy a morning scenic drive to Punakha. Along the way, cross Dochula Pass and proceed to Druk Wangyal Chortens, where the construction of 108 chortens was commissioned by the eldest Queen Mother. Next, take a light hike through fields of assorted vegetables that will take you to Chimi Lhakhang, a pilgrimage site for childless couples. Here, you will enjoy a river side picnic lunch specially arrange. Camera ready as we proceed on to Punakha Dzong, situated at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers.
